"body_md": "Aurora Energy Solutions, the primary firewood supplier for Interior Alaska since 2020, announced in mid-July that it will wind down operations by the end of 2026, eliminating ten jobs. The closure leaves households and businesses across Fairbanks and North Pole, where wood heat is often the main furnace rather than a weekend hobby, looking for a new source of firewood before winter sets in.\n\nOutgoing general manager Susan Shopper said the cost was never the logs themselves. It was harvesting, trucking, cutting, splitting and drying the wood that made the operation unprofitable.\n\nRandy Bezdek, owner of The Hungry Robot in Fairbanks, uses up to 60 cords of wood a year. He said that if he cannot find an alternative source of wood, he will have to change the core of how the restaurant runs.\n\nFor households and businesses considering a switch to another heating system, the cost has risen. A replacement that used to run roughly $10,000 to $15,000 now runs closer to $20,000. Federal air quality change-out subsidies exist to help offset that cost, but they do not close a gap that size on their own. Electric and natural gas heating are other options, though neither is inexpensive in the Interior.\n\nSmaller independent firewood sellers are still operating around the Interior, but they are much smaller than the supplier that is leaving.",
